Colour Theory Basics

Today we worked with color mixing and acrylic paints.


Paint = pigment(colour) and medium(something that holds the pigment and makes paint spreadable)

Remember there are two kinds of color - subtractive (uses pigments - for example, paints) and additive (uses light - as on computers, projectors)

Install Gimp

To install Gimp on your computer, install first the GTK environment, then the Gimp program itself. You will find both here:

We are working with a graphics program called The Gimp. Students can install this program on a computer at home and continue to experiment with the program. (just ask me for a copy)

Follow through the tutorial and you should be able to make a stickman with a sunny shadow.

Remember that this tutorial was written for an earlier version of Gimp so there are a few changes with this version.

These are the building blocks of art. You should know what these elements are and be able to explain what they mean. You should be able to recognize these elements in works of art and photography.

Elements of Art

Term II
The first, and very important, assignment of Term II is to complete four outline drawings in using a black ink marker. You may use pencil to plan your drawing but all pencil must be erased from the final image. Don't do any shading or colouring in - you may use some hatching or cross- hatching.

You will scan these images and use them to learn about computer manipulation of images. You will transform these images on the computer using the program "Gimp."

This image below shows an example of hatching and crosshatching. Notice how the bottom set of lips looks better because the hatching lines follow the contour of the lips.





































You may, of course, just do a simple ink drawing - there is lots you will do with it on the computer.

What is a hue?__________________________________________

1 What is the difference between the right side of the brain and the left side of the brain? How is this important in drawing? What are some of the thoughts we should be thinking as we draw? What should we not be thinking as we draw? (Answer this question fully) ______________________________________________________ The right side of the brain uses images and relationships to understand. The left side of the brain uses words and logic. With the right side of the brain we can see things – like we can recognize people – without using words. In drawing we must ignore the left side of the brain that can only use words and logic. Your left side will tell you that it is too hard to draw! When we draw we should not think about “what” things are, but just look at the angles of lines, the shapes, the spaces, the relationships, the darkness and lightness etc – something like putting together a jigsaw puzzle. When we draw we should not be thinking, that it is too hard or about what things ‘are’. We should just be looking carefully.

2 What is negative space? How is this important when drawing?_ Negative space is the space inbetween the shapes of an object and the spaces around an object. For example, the spaces between the legs of a chair. It is very important to look at negative spaces when drawing, if we draw the negative space we will end up with accurate shapes in our drawing.______________________________________________________ 3 What are contours? _____________________________________________ Contours are the lines and edges that we see on things.
