Basic Forms

As you practice drawing basic forms you train your eye to see areas of light and dark. As you draw these areas your forms appear 3D. These basic forms are found in the structure of many things around us.

Gimp Tutorials

Here are some Gimp tutorials to try. Click on the link and follow the instructions.
Remember Gimp 1.0 is slightly different than Gimp 2.2 which is what we are working with - try to do the tutorials that are for Gimp 2.

Colour Theory Basics

Today we worked with color mixing and acrylic paints.

Paint = pigment(colour) and medium(something that holds the pigment and makes paint spreadable)

Color Wheel:
Here are some places to look more.

colour wheel information

play with an online colour wheel

Remember there are two kinds of color - subtractive (uses pigments - for example, paints) and additive (uses light - as on computers, projectors)

The Gimp

We are working with a graphics program called The Gimp. Students can install this program on a computer at home and continue to experiment with the program. (just ask me for a copy)

Here is a link to the first tutorial that we did:
The Stickman Tutorial

Follow through the tutorial and you should be able to make a stickman with a sunny shadow.

Remember that this tutorial was written for an earlier version of Gimp so there are a few changes with this version.

    Term II
The first, and very important, assignment of Term II is to complete four outline drawings in using a black ink marker. You may use pencil to plan your drawing but all pencil must be erased from the final image. Don't do any shading or colouring in - you may use some hatching or cross- hatching.

You will scan these images and use them to learn about computer manipulation of images. You will transform these images on the computer using the program "Gimp."

    drawing by: Dee Rimbaud

This image below shows an example of hatching and crosshatching. Notice how the bottom set of lips looks better because the hatching lines follow the contour of the lips.

You may, of course, just do a simple ink drawing - there is lots you will do with it on the computer.

    What is a hue?__________________________________________

hue is another word for ‘colour’_____________________________

1 What is the difference between the right side of the brain and the left side of the brain? How is this important in drawing? What are some of the thoughts we should be thinking as we draw? What should we not be thinking as we draw? (Answer this question fully) ______________________________________________________ The right side of the brain uses images and relationships to understand. The left side of the brain uses words and logic. With the right side of the brain we can see things – like we can recognize people – without using words. In drawing we must ignore the left side of the brain that can only use words and logic. Your left side will tell you that it is too hard to draw! When we draw we should not think about “what” things are, but just look at the angles of lines, the shapes, the spaces, the relationships, the darkness and lightness etc – something like putting together a jigsaw puzzle. When we draw we should not be thinking, that it is too hard or about what things ‘are’. We should just be looking carefully.

2 What is negative space? How is this important when drawing?_ Negative space is the space inbetween the shapes of an object and the spaces around an object. For example, the spaces between the legs of a chair. It is very important to look at negative spaces when drawing, if we draw the negative space we will end up with accurate shapes in our drawing.______________________________________________________ 3 What are contours? _____________________________________________ Contours are the lines and edges that we see on things. Contours are the lines around something and also the lines that define the shape of something. Eg, the lines around your eyes, the line of the eyelashes, the line of the eyebrow – these are the contours._____

Part C: Practical Tests: Draw each of the following.

    1. 5 minute blind contour drawing of your foot/shoe

    2. draw 5 foreshortened squares

    3. draw 3 foreshortened cubes that touch each other in some way – add shading and shadow to correspond with the placement on an imaginary sun

    4. draw the pumpkin – include shading and the shadow on the surface of the table

This is a painting by Daphne Odjig.

Here are a few notes to introduce the Visual Arts and Communication Course. I am very happy to teach this course.

Start each and every class with 5 minutes drawing practice or exercise. (examples of warm up:)

Blind contour drawing. - Stare at the edge of the object and move pencil as if you are touching the object. Do not look at the paper while you are drawing.)

Foreshortened squares, cubes, shadows: - 3D drawing techniques

Gesture Drawing: A quick drawing that trys to show the movement and energy within the form.

Sketch book ruleno removing pages. If you really are not satified with a page you can glue something over it. You may alter the cover as you like. You may glue things into the book, but never remove anything. Pages should be dated.

    Term Marks:

    • Sketchbook and Assignments

    • Illustration Friday – at least six entries
